A new sculpture by Richard Deacon for Beaufort 24 in Knokke-Heist

Richard Deacon is one of the eighteen artists invited by the curator Els Wuyts to Beaufort 24, the eighth edition of the Beaufort Triennial, held along the Belgian coast from 27 March to 3 November 2024 on the theme "Fabric of Life". His sculpture, in stainless steel on a concrete base, 280 x 260 x 240 cm, stands in the Burgemeester de Ghelderepark, Elizabetlaan, in Heist-aan-Zee (Knokke-Heist). Its organic forms recall the speech bubbles of a comic strip, as in its first title, "Everybody is talking"; its four sides and square base follow the points of the compass, with reference to the word "news"; the cloud-like shapes allude to the Beaufort wind scale. The work is made of flattened tubes pressed into one another, with the joints left visible, and has a brushed surface that changes with the light and with the movement of the viewer.
