Francesco De Grandi commissioned to paint the Drappellone for the Palio di Siena of 16 August 2025

On 4 February 2025 the Giunta Comunale of Siena, on the proposal of the mayor Nicoletta Fabio, commissioned Francesco De Grandi to paint the Drappellone for the Palio of 16 August 2025, the race dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. The municipal act describes De Grandi, born and raised in Palermo, as an artist of renowned standing. Under the terms of the commission the artist is to present a sketch by 30 March; the banner must show the image of the Virgin of the Assumption venerated in the Cathedral, the coats of arms required by the Palio regulations and the date of the race. On Thursday 27 March 2025 staff of the Municipality of Siena delivered the silk and the frame for the banner to the artist's studio in Palermo. The work is destined for the museum of the contrada that wins the race.
