Francesco De Grandi's Drappellone for the Palio di Siena unveiled at Palazzo Pubblico

The Drappellone painted by Francesco De Grandi for the Palio di Siena of 16 August 2025 was presented to the city on Sunday 10 August at 7 pm in the Cortile del Podestà of Palazzo Pubblico. After the sound of the chiarine the banner was unveiled; the mayor of Siena, Nicoletta Fabio, spoke first, followed by the critic and curator Helga Marsala, who gave a reading of the work, and by the artist. As described by Artribune, the painting shows the Virgin as a young woman of today, a gallop of riders in the sky with Siena as a golden apparition, and a third section with the coats of arms of the contrade. The Palio was won by the Contrada di Valdimontone with the jockey Giuseppe Zedde, known as Gingillo. By rule the Drappellone goes to the museum of the winning contrada.
