Mattia Barbieri: Maciste contro Maciste at SUBPLACE, Milan
SUBPLACE, Stazione del Passante Ferroviario di Villapizzone, Milan, Italy
19 March – 15 April 2024
Mattia Barbieri presents Maciste contro Maciste at SUBPLACE, a window space in the mezzanine of the Villapizzone station of the Passante Ferroviario in Milan. SUBPLACE is an offshoot of Surplace, the independent space active in Varese since 2014; the project is self-managed and self-funded and is run by its founders Joykix and Rossella Moratto with Luca Scarabelli. The painting on view shows the figure of Maciste as a solemn, icon-like presence that watches passers-by, and as the field of the artist's own struggle with painting. According to the press release, Barbieri combines brush, palette knife, fingers and rollers and draws on Greek and Roman sculpture, rock engravings, manga and digital images. The exhibition opened on 19 March 2024 at 6 pm and ran until 15 April 2024.
