Fungi Orchestra, made with Katharina Maderthaner's students, analysed as a Good Practice by transform.NRW

On 9 March 2026 the platform transform.NRW analysed Fungi Orchestra as one of its Good Practices, using the Map/ing Sustainability method. Fungi Orchestra (2025) is a collaborative sound installation and performance led by Maria Wildeis, in which the bioelectrical impulses of fungi, inaudible to humans, are translated into sound. It was shown at Kunsthalle Barmen in Wuppertal as part of the exhibition Fruchtbare Strukturen – Laborausstellung für vernetztes Denken und Handeln. Students of Industrial Design at Bergische Universität Wuppertal, from the class led by Professor Katharina Maderthaner, carried out preparatory work for the installation, including the ceramic structures on which the fungi grew. Maderthaner attended the analysis session and took part in the discussion.
