Daniele Franzella: Austerlitz in the former Chiesa di Gesù e Maria, Gibellina

Daniele Franzella presents Austerlitz in Gibellina, as part of the programme of Gibellina Capitale Italiana dell'Arte Contemporanea 2026. The project, presented by Elenk'art within Generazione Sicilia: collezione Elenk'art, gathers a series of installations in the Chiesa di Gesù e Maria, designed by Nanda Vigo, and in the square in front of it. According to the organisers, Franzella investigates the concept of image through sculpture, reworking the codes of historicised art forms; the imagery draws on memories of war and dictatorship and on dystopian scenarios, and the works adopt a monumental, seemingly commemorative language whose solemnity is undermined from within. The installation opened on Friday 16 January 2026 at 5 pm, on the inaugural days of the Capital's programme. In an interview with Exibart, artistic director Andrea Cusumano mentions three works by Franzella installed inside and outside the church.
