Artist Stephan Engelke

Stephan Engelke

Based in Duisburg / Düsseldorf

Stephan Engelke’s work encompasses freestanding sculptures, relief-like wall objects, installations, as well as works on and made of paper. Often, various lines of process—of varying duration and complexity—lead to ever-changing, often merely temporary images: constellations of materials and elements that have undergone varying degrees of treatment at different points in time.
Occasionally, Engelke also subjects some of the supposedly finished pictorial objects to critical examination and revision, without their previous states having completely lost their validity. As part of the process of creating later configurations, they are genealogically linked to one another. However, there are also other connections that arise through formal or thematic affinities, as is the case, for example, with explicit series.
In general, transformation, deconstruction, and reconstruction play an important role in his work, as do ordering and reordering according to changing criteria, and the interplay of rules and breaks.
