Ruben Benjamin Smulczynski

1990. Based in Düsseldorf

In his artistic practice, Ruben Benjamin Smulczynski employs traditional and digital techniques to trace and explore both the history of art, the body, and textiles, and the relationships between them. He takes his materials – fabrics, beads, sequins, and jewellery elements – and drapes them on supports such as canvases, or fabrics suspended in space. The works repeatedly incorporate motifs like eyes or flowers, including in historical reference to Surrealist artists and fashion designers. The resulting assemblages suggest a human presence while simultaneously concealing it.
